Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila led the winners of the Golden Kubeta Awards, a campaign on proper wastewater management conducted by Maynilad.

FEU’s public restroom won the People’s Choice Award after receiving over 10,000 votes on social media, besting 9 other nominees that included Miriam College, University of the Philippines Diliman Palma Hall, Port of Batangas, Park N Ride, PITX, National Museum of Natural History, Uptown Place Mall in Taguig, XentroMall Batangas, and XentroMall Polangui.

FEU also topped the schools and universities category of the 2019 edition of the annual awards competition that gave out 4 division awards on November 19 in observance of the United Nations World Toilet Day campaign towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 of global sanitation for all by 2030.

National Museum of Natural History in Manila won the government offices category.

Xentro Mall Polangui in Albay won the malls and restaurants category.

Maynilad revealed that the four winners received the highest final scores after a rigorous three-step selection process that combined physical audits (80%) with social media voting (20%).

The four winners emerged as the best in their respective categories in the contest that drew 41 establishments that were voted by the pubic from November 12 to 15 and raised conversations about proper wastewater management as well as clean and comfortable public restrooms in business establishments.

“While serving only the West Zone, we believe it is our duty to help the public understand wastewater management better, in hopes of spurring positive action that will, ultimately, result in the rehabilitation and preservation of our water bodies,” Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said in his speech during the awards ceremony.

“We hope that all of you here today will also be our partners in spreading the gospel of proper wastewater management. Our collective effort in ensuring that wastewater is properly treated before being discharged to different bodies of water will ensure a better future for the next generation,” Fernandez added.

Environmental action movers in the Philippines have been receiving international recognition among them, the Ocean 6 women swimmers of Dumaguete, Mt. Everest climber Carina Dayondon, climate advocates Atom Araullo and Victoria Tauli Corpuz, and EcoWaste Coalition’s Manny Calonzo.
