What is a plantable pencil? It’s a Cebu-based startup company’s solution to throwing away pencils that are too short for writing or drawing.
Eco Hub Cebu produces and sells pencils that can grow into plants once the stub is placed on moist soil.
The environmentally-friendly company from Cebu developed the regular pencil using gelatin capsules containing plant seeds in the tail end instead of erasers.
Buyers have the option to choose from different varieties of seeds such as basil, carrot, citronella, sunflower, tomato, and more. The seeded pencil stubs can grow in as fast as 5 to 10 days.
The plantable pencils are lead-free and are made from sustainable wood, graphite, and clay. Each capsule is allergen free, gluten-free, and preservative-free. Seeds are also non-genetically modified.
The plantable pencils are the newest addition to Eco Hub Cebu product lines that include reusable straws and utensils. The pencils are safe for children and have become the symbol of sustainability.
