Filipino wakeboarder Raphael Trinidad from Cebu won the silver medal in the Men’s Open Wakeboard final at the IWWF World Cable Wakeboard Championship in Argentina – marking the first podium finish of the Philippines in a wakeboarding world competition.
The 17-year old Cebuano nailed his run and scored 75.33 after impressing the judges with his difficult yet beautifully executed combos.
The teenage silver medalist from the Philippines competed against 5 of the finest wakeboarders around the world including two he looks up to in wakeboarding world – Lior Sofer of Israel and Liam Peacock from Great Britain who eventually bagged the gold and bronze medal, respectively.
“It feels like a miracle that we made it here. I’m super stoked to land the runs I was planning to. I’m super happy just to ride with Lio and Liam and have a good time,” Trinidad told the show commentators about his experience.
Trinidad also joined the juniors division and finished 5th place after scoring 55.0 in the final run.
In his Facebook post, Raphael Trinidad thanked his family, friends and his supporters, and dedicated his win to the Philippines.
“#Pilipinas WE FINALLY GOT IT!!! It wasn’t an easy feat, but beyond stoked to land my best run during the finals. I am so proud to bring the first podium finish of Philippine wakeboarding on a world competition. #silvermedal #silvermedalist Bring shout to all the riders who came for the IWWF Wakepark World Championships in Argentina!” Trinidad shared.
