Filipino-American actress Vanessa Hudgens received praises from critics and netizens alike for her performance on the Fox Live Television version of the hit Broadway musical, RENT.
Hudgens played the role of Maureen on RENT – the role made iconic by Idina Menzel’s powerful and sustained singing. The musical created by Jonathan Larson is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème” about a group of young artists living in New York City during the height of the AIDS epidemic.
The Fil-Am actor, more popularly known as lead in the High School Musical television series, was referred to as carrying the show in a Washington Post article titled, “The Best Part of RENT: Live was Vanessa Hudgens.”
Travis Andrews writes:
“… until Vanessa Hudgens showed up as Maureen Johnson, the bisexual performance artist with a difficulty remaining faithful to her romantic partners… gave a thrilling and shameless portrayal of Maureen, who struck the stage like a bolt of lighting, shocking everyone around her into life as the first act concluded and leading to a much livelier second act. (It didn’t hurt that, unlike many of her peers, she can both sing and act.)”
Hudgens also received praises from Netizens who went on Twitter and Instagram to say, in one way or another, that the singer-actress deserves to be put up on a pedestal.
