For 2020, the Top Google Scholar Citations used Webometrics, an online ranking system for the world’s universities based on web content and visibility.
The use of Webometrics underlines the fact that universities’ online presence is increasingly becoming their main showcase. Web visibility is of paramount importance to any academic institution as more academic institutions are spending more time and resources to improve their presence and reach on the web, while more and more scholars use the internet to find and share scientific information.
The importance of more serious consideration of web publication has become apparent as well. It is not only a form of scholarly communication but can be considered as part of the overall organization and performance of universities.
From all the top-ranked universities around the world, there are eight universities from the Philippines that are in the Webometrics Ranking of the World Universities. The University of the Philippines received the highest citations among the universities in the country. The University of San Carlos and Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology hold the distinction of being the only schools outside of Luzon that made it to the Global ranking.
