For their exemplary academic and community performance, 10 children of Filipino overseas workers were awarded by the Bank of the Philippine Islands as part of the bank’s annual Ten Outstanding Expat Pinoy Children.
The awardees for this year include Kennie Kabeen Alegno, Armando Araneta, Jirah Cortes Armandico, Jezza Boquilon, Jordan Cabandong, Alyanna Cunanan, Daryl Del Rosario, Maris Cay Gabornes, Nikko Jones Servanio, and Lean Angelo Silverio. All of them are college students from different schools.
Some of the awardees are also taking up college courses similar to their parents’ profession.
Five of the awardees have parents who are working as seafarers, others are accountants, site operators, or nurses. Each of them will be getting a trophy and a P50,000 BPInoy Savings account.
Some of the parents were also present during the awarding held last November 16 at the BPI main office in Makati City.
The awardees were judged based on their essays, which included their role in the society and school. The essay should also include how their parents inspired them.
This is the third year that the BPI conducted the awards. BPI Senior Vice President and Group Head of Overseas banking and Channel Services Teresita Tan said the goal of the contest is to inspire other children of overseas Filipino workers to excel in their academic and extra-curricular endeavors.
“Children and family members of OFWs form a big part of our population. We aim to engage them to actively participate in the growth and development of our nation,” Tan said.
For his part, the event’s guest speaker Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said he wants children of overseas workers to also become part of nation building, not just by working abroad but by contributing with the right leadership and entrepreneurship in the country.
