Master of the Universe by Jonas Eslao
Rene Cuvos and Jonas Eslao, two of the Philippines’ rising stars in the local art scene, are a part of a prestigious four-nation art exhibit in Singapore featuring works of leading contemporary artists from Japan, Korea Indonesia and the Philippines.
The exhibition entitled Beyond Borders IV, will be staged at the Art Space of the Royal Plaza on Scotts from October 1 to November 4, 2009. This one of a kind exhibit is a collaboration between three Singapore-based art groups – Aryaseni Gallery, AndrewShire Gallery and Art Sentral Asia.

The Litany by Rene Cuvos
This thought provoking exhibit explores the playful and haunting surrealism artworks of the talented Filipino artists.
Rene Cuvos’ art pieces dwell on political and social commentary. They also closely study of an indivdual’s character and personality. He delves into the irony of a person whose intentions are intrinsically good, but whose heart is hard and unfeeling. It also illustrates the impunity by which people in power treat their positions. Cuvos tells us that the strangers we meet are never who we expect them to be, despite their pretensions. In the end, we might even be strangers to ourselves.

Is it You or Me by Jonas Eslao
Jonas Eslao majored in Painting at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and was among the top seven winners in the Robinson’s Artstrokes Competition in 2005. Eslao explores various aspects of contradiction in his figurative works, where representations of “people and familiar persona as subjects gives embodiment to different kinds of conflict”, as the artist defines it. Eslao utilizes figurative subjects to embody culture, attitudes, beliefs, and norms reflective of such contradictions.
Also joining Cuvos and Eslao in the month-long exhibition are the expressionist and impressionist canvases of Indonesia’s young visual artists Oetje and Zipit Supomo, and the talented artistry of Korean painter Hwang Kyong and Japan’s Ryo Naruse.

Gravida by Rene Cuvos
Some of these top-notch artists have exhibited in leading galleries in Tokyo, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Amsterdam.
This is fourth installment of the Beyond Borders series in Singapore which also featured in past years, Elmer Borlongan, Jose Santos III, Mark Justiniani, Vincent Padilla, Jon Jaylo and CJ Tanedo.
