“Reflections” by Arnelio Alano

Arnelio Alano’s entry entitled “Reflections” won runner-up honors in the 3rd RPA-Luas Art Competition in Dublin Ireland.

The contest was organized by the Railway Procurement Agency in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust, as artists were invited to submit entries using the theme of Luas Docklands – the new extension of the Luas Red Line to The Point, which opened in December 2009.

Alano’s work together with the winning entry will be displayed at Luas stops and on trams and feature on the cover of the RPA-Luas 2010 calendar along with the other runners-up.

Alano was born in the Philippines and has been based in Dublin over the past three years as an Architectural technician. Before moving to Ireland, Arnel worked for 19 years in Saudi Arabia as an architectural designer.

All 12 Runners-Up were each awarded a month on the limited edition RPA 2010 Official Calendar. The Runner-up prize also consists of:

Alano’s work came in second to the winning design of Eamon Whyte’s “UnTIEtled,” inspired by the work of Abram Games, a poster artist whose strong clear images were used as public service announcements in Britain during World War Two. A commuter’s tie was given a twist with the design of an elevated view of a tram to capture the theme of the competition.

For his part, Alano’s describes his work as “the ship symbolizing the past and the tram symbolizing the present, but both modes of transport are very important to us because we cannot build the present without the past.”
