The Philippines is the 10th biggest user of Twitter in the world, with 9.5 million Filipino users registered in the micro-blogging site. The country trails Spain and is ahead of Turkey, according to a recent global poll of social media monitor Semiocast which analyzed 517 million Twitter profiles.
Officially dubbed the “social media capital of the world,” the Philippines is already one of the biggest users of Facebook, with around 93.9% of its 40-million Internet population on the social networking site.
The country surpassed more progressive nations in largely because of the affordability of gadgets and the accessibility of Internet services made available by local telcos.
The Philippines as a Twitter nation is “not really surprising,” commented Smart Communications Inc. Chief Wireless Advisor Orlando Vea. “Filipinos have always been active in social media and we are increasingly using mobile phones to tweet or post on Facebook.” At the height of flooding all over the country the other day, hundreds of thousands of Filipinos posted on Twitter to spread flood information as well as to mobilize rescue and relief operations.
Smart, for its part, has also been very active in social media sites.
The telco has more than 1.2 million ‘likes’ on Facebook, the most from any Filpino company, over 15,000 friends on Foursquare and close to 200,000 followers on Twitter.
